Black-capped Capuchin Monkey, Pantanal, Brazil

Black-capped capuchin also known as tufted or brown capuchin, was rather common in the Pantanal area. They are somewhat clever, since they have been seen using stones to open nuts and even using fine sticks or straws to get syrup or “fishing” for ants. We met them in a small gallery forest and thought they will disappear as soon as they saw us, but apparently they were curious of our activities, so at some point we wondered who was observing whom?

The Jaguar Bianca
Brasilien är ju fotboll, Copacabana, Rio etc. men för de flestas av oss var det ju för att om möjligt få se denna vackra dam som vi begav till Pantanal och dess nästan oändliga våtmarker. Med en areal på uppemot 200 000 km² under regnperioden är Pantanal världens största våtmark som täcker delar av Brasilien, Paraguay och Bolivia. Det vill säga Pantanal är like stor som halva Sveriges yta; area på 449 964 km². Nog med stat. (Wikipedia).
Vi hade turen att redan först dagen få en 2 timmars lång fotosession med denna vackra jaguar-dam (Bianca). Det kändes som ett fantastiskt privilegium att under så lång tid kunna iakttaga och fotografera henne. En utveckling av eko-turism har gjort att både regeringen (om än i blygsam skala) samt en del privata markägare och andra frivilliga har insett att en levande jaguar ute i markerna är mer värdefull än ett skin på väggen. Vi får nu bara passa oss att denna turism inte överexploateras och ändrar på djurens vanor och levnadsvillkor; som eko-turismen har gjort bl.a. i Kenya och Tanzania.

En tidig morgon för ett par veckor sedan mötte jag dessa tvillingar tillsammans med sin mor. Ett trevligt möte, men lite förvånad blev jag nog över hur pass små kalvarna faktisk var vid denna tid på året (slutet på augusti).

Just to see her float through the vegetation during a light summer night felt like a privilege. To see wolves in their own natural habitat behaving calm and relaxed was amazing. Through the night we were lucky to observe a couple of interactions between wolves and bears.
The wolves in this wilderness are at least more likely to survive than their unlucky Swedish relatives. The importance of this top predator cannot be underestimated since it is shown that its presences can restore whole habitats, among other things by increasing biodiversity.
